Coronavirus death toll rises: 68-year-old woman in Delhi is India’s second COVID-19 fatality

Her son, who had a travel history to Switzerland and Italy in Feb, has also tested positive.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare stated in a Press communication that the death of a 68-year-old woman from West Delhi (mother of a confirmed case of the novel coronavirus), is confirmed to be caused due to co-morbidity (diabetes and hypertension). She has also tested positive for COVID-19.

She had a history of contact with a positive case – her son who had a travel history to Switzerland and Italy between 5 & 22 February. The son had returned to India on 23 Feb. He was initially asymptomatic, but developed a fever and cough after 1 day and reported to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on 7 March. The family was screened and since he and his mother had fever and cough, both were admitted.

The woman was a known case of diabetes and hypertension. Her sample was collected on 8 March. Her condition worsened on 9 March with development of pneumonia and she was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Her sample also tested positive for COVID-19.

Since 9 March she experienced respiratory fluctuations and was provided ventilator support. However, due to comorbid conditions, she died on 13 march at RML Hospital, Delhi, as confirmed by the treating Physician and Medical Superintendent.

All the precautionary measures as per protocol including screening and quarantine of the contacts is already taken up by the Ministry of Health, Government of Delhi, and the status is being monitored, the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare said.
