Transport Min: FASTag Sales up 330%, over 70 lakh issued so far, 560 toll plazas accept FASTag

New Delhi: Over 70 lakh FASTags have been issued till date, with the highest single day issuance of 1,35,583 Tags on 26 November 2019, while 1.03 lakh Tags were issued on the day before. The average daily issuance has grown by 330%, from 8,000 in July to 35,000 FASTags sold in November this year. FASTags have been declared mandatory for all vehicles from 1 December, 2019.

As per a Government Gazette notification, any vehicle without a FASTag entering into a FASTag lane at an NH fee plaza will have to pay a fee equivalent to two times the fees applicable to that category of vehicle.

After the waiver of FASTag costs from 21 November, there has been a growth in FASTag issuance of over 130%. FASTag is accepted at 560+ Toll Plazas and more plazas are being added on a daily basis, said a Press release from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.

National Electronic Toll Collection (FASTag) program, the flagship initiative of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and NHAI has been implemented pan-India in order to remove bottlenecks and ensure seamless movement of traffic and collection of user fee as per notified rates, using passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

To give a major fillip to digital payments and bring in enhanced transparency, all lanes of toll plazas on National Highways will be declared FASTag lanes by 1 December 2019, while provisioning one lane in each direction as a hybrid lane that will accept FASTag as well as other modes of payment.

With the above mandate, average daily transactions processed through FASTag have grown from 880,000 in July this year to 1,12,000 transactions in November, while the average daily collection has grown from Rs 11.2 crore to Rs 19.5 crore for the given period.

Certain commuters face difficulty at Toll Plazas due to low balance in FASTag. To mitigate such difficulty, commuters are advised to maintain sufficient balance in the account/wallet linked to FASTag, said the release.

All available modes of recharge like Debit and Credit Cards, Net Banking, and UPI have been enabled for loading money to the FASTag account. To help understand the recharging process, an FAQ has been released.
